Songwriting Workshops

Kirsten has years of experience teaching songwriting to children, teenagers, and adults in a variety of settings. Workshops can be presented solo or with another songwriter and can be focused on individual or group writing. Typically sessions will begin with a performance, followed by a group activity introducing a songwriting technique and time to free write alone or with collaborators. At the end of each workshop, anyone is welcome to share. The goal is to create a welcoming and creative space for all participants and to explore ways of writing lyrics, melody, and harmony.

Workshop length: 1-2 hours (though timing is flexible)
Recommended ages: all

If interested in organizing a workshop at a school, library, hospital, or other venue, please contact Kirsten.

Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Workshops and Lectures

As part of the internationally-acclaimed klezmer quintet Ezekiel’s Wheels, Kirsten has co-taught and facilitated workshops, lectures, and masterclasses on klezmer music and performance. Most suitable for music and Jewish studies departments, Ezekiel’s Wheels workshops focus on either performing in the klezmer idiom, composing and/or arranging new klezmer tunes, and/or improvising in klezmer music. The group can provide source recordings and sheet music in advance or use student- or faculty-selected materials. These workshops can also be paired with concert performances.

Workshop length: 1-2 hours (though timing is flexible)
Recommended ages: teenagers through adults (though children’s programming is also available)
