Saturday night at the Blue Note

This Saturday (December 29th), I’m really excited to be playing at the Blue Note in New York City! I’ll be playing with Evan Greer and Spiritchild under the name Back to the Roots. I’ve played with the two of them several times before in the Boston area and it’s a fun project. Evan’s a riot-folk singer, Spiritchild is a hip hop emcee and producer, and their musical collaboration brings both genres back to their roots as a political force, with an infectious live energy. The band’s debut album will be coming out sometime next year (in fact, I will be recording bass on it this weekend), but until then, the only chance to hear the group is in person.

On Saturday, we’ll be playing a short feature set as part of the thirteenth anniversary celebration of Spiritchild’s band Mental Notes. It’s an amazing opportunity to get to perform alongside this lineup and at this legendary venue. It’s a late show–we’re starting at midnight and it’s $10.

Hope to see some NYC friends this weekend!

Wednesday shows

16049_311877705578425_613285395_nTomorrow (Wednesday, December 5th), I’m going to be playing three different shows:

First, at noon, I’ll be making my debut with the Boston-based kid-oriented band Animal Farm. It’s a mixture of singing, playing, and acting. We’re playing a school assembly at the Pierce School in Brookline.

Next, at 7 pm, I’ll be playing a short set at the Middle East Downstairs with Evan Greer and Spiritchild. We’ll be opening up for The Coup, which is really exciting.

Finally, at 10 pm, I’m playing a couple sets at Toad with Cold Chocolate. We’re going to be trying out some new tunes, and it’s a free show, so come on by!

Also, Rachel Aumiller and her Illegits now is online, just in time to advertise our show in NYC in a couple weeks, as well as our debut EP, which will be released digitally by the end of the year, and on discs early next year. Stay tuned!

DuoFest and other weekend shows

I’m playing a bunch in the next couple days and this weekend:

Tonight (Thursday, January 26th) I’m headed up to Lowell to play with the Goodtime Stringband at Life Alive. We’ll be playing from 6 until 8 pm.

Tomorrow (Friday, January 27th) I’ll be in Lawrence playing with Back to the Roots, the hip hop/riot folk collaboration of Evan Greer and spiritchild. We’re playing as part of the kickoff to the People’s Music Network Winter Gathering, happening this weekend.

Saturday (January 28th) I’ll be playing an informal show at the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market from 10 am til 1 pm with Garlic & Moonshine.

Following that (also on Saturday), I’m excited to be a part of DuoFest, happening from 3 pm until 7 or so at Atwoods in Cambridge. DuoFest is an afternoon of music featuring many duos of the same instrument (so two guitars, two banjos, two cellos, two saxophones…) I’ll be playing with another upright bass player, Tony Leva. We’ve been playing a bunch together to work up a set, and it’s been really fun to play with another upright bassist! We’ll be performing an original arrangement of a North African tune, one of my tunes, and a couple of other bass duets. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and the whole afternoon of music is just $5.

Also stay tuned for some upcoming recording releases–the new Ethan Robbins & Cold Chocolate EP is almost finished, and the debut Spider Cider EP coming together quickly as well!

tour kickoff and benefit show

There a couple of gigs that should be really fun that are coming up this week:

First, Thursday night (September 8th) is the tour kickoff show for Kristen Ford and Kara Kulpa’s three month national tour (!). They’re going to be all over country, so be sure to check out their tour schedule to see when you can catch them. The show on Thursday should be a great start on their grand adventure — if you’re in the Boston area, come on down to the Middle East Upstairs to hear Left Hand Does, Audrey Ryan, the Kara Kulpa Band, and the Kristen Ford Band. Music starts at 8 pm. I’ll be playing with both Kara and Kristen’s bands.

Then, on Saturday night (September 10th) I’ll be playing at a benefit show to raise funds and awareness for the upcoming trial of political prisoner Tarek Mehanna. I’ll be playing with Evan Greer and spiritchild as part of their new project Back to the Roots, which combines folk, punk, and hip hop in an effort to use music as a medium for social and political change. Additional musical performances on Saturday include Broadcast Live, Abu Nurah, and MC Elijah Black. The show will be at The Community Church of Boston starting at 6 pm.
